Reviews for Leupold RX-II Rangefinder

Reviews for Leupold RX-II Rangefinder

1. Overall I am happy with the RXII Rangefinder, as it does give the line of sight distance and the point of aim distance at the same time. Out to 300 yards this will not change enough for the magnum calibers to honestly mattert. I do wish I would have looked a bit harder to find a rangefinder that is easier to see in low light. Also the unit itself has a ton of features for bow and rifle hunters. Too many in my opinion. As a person that is "technically challenged", prefer to aquire a target and get the range. Never claimed to be an electronic guru, and it is a bit confusing to get the proper settings. The information on the website for the settings for Bullet placement (BPX) is very limited in the choice of loads, but with a bit of long range trial and error it can be figured out. Would not want to by this a few days BEFORE the hunt for sure.

Just a few things I would look for if wanting a range finder for rifle shooting. The claimed distance is 700 yards... That is for reflective targets. I found it fairly accurate out to 500 yards on paper targets and about 340 on solid dark objects. In this case an angus bull standing in the pasture. have not tried the rain mode.. Yes, worth $200, but would prefer to pay a bit more and get more range, less features and something easier to see in low light.

2. I both bow and rifle hunt. The Leupold RX-II Rangefinder has 3 bow modes with with true range. It also has several rifle combined with cal. functions. Both bow and rifle have the true range. The Leupold RX-II Rangefinder is easy to use and easy to figure out. It comes with both a manual and the pouch has a snap or d-ring for attaching to your hydration pak. comes in handy. I bought this product brand new still in a sealed box, for $200.40. That's with shipping. This is a 6x magnification tool. All in all you can spend more if you need more. This fills the bill for me. I think if you tool up on a budget and you want quality, this is the rangefinder for you. You can find them for 200-229$ if you shop around.

3. I purchased for Antelope hunt in Wyoming. First one did not work right and was sent back for repair after the hunt. A new one was sent by Leupold. I find it very difficult to set up and get the right ballistic group. Too many features. Does not measure game out beyond about 300 yd. With a fast caliber sighted in for 200 yd I can hold on and get my game at that range. Not very useful. A Rangefinder is needed for 350+ yards and this one falls down at that range. Save your money and pay for a high quality like Leica that actually works at 400 yd on game. The side of a barn isn't a useful object to be able to range. Plus, this isn't even made by Leupold. It is a Chinese import. Bad move Leupold as it falls below their usual high standards. Bean counters must be in
charge there instead of people who actually hunt.

4. As a rule I purchase Leupold optics. I purchased this compact range finder because I wanted a compact to hunt with this fall. I already have another range finder with a 800 yard capability. This was a 750 yard and should be almost equal. It is not. I will continue to practice with this new one before I consider it to be 1/2 the other. It will not read out the distances tht the other range finder does in test side by side. To say I was disappointed would be an under statement.

Revewis for Leupold RX-600 Rangefinder

1. I was asked to purchase a range finder for a hunting buddy. After looking at several, I felt that the best product for the best price was this Leupold rangefinder. It has numerous advanced features, and is accurate way past what he needs as a bow hunter. He doesn't hunt from a tree stand, so doesn't need the angle compensation feature. I looked through it and it has wonderful optics, as one would expect. Would recommend a magnetic closure case that can be opened and closed one handed, as this case requires both hands. Otherwise, a beautiful product.

2. This Leupold RX-600 Rangefinder works very well and exceeds my expectations. It is utter simplicity to operate, and the optics are clear and bright. After searching for information about possible Rangefinders, and procrastinating far too long, this appeared to be the best choice. Leupold products have always been of high quality in my experience, and this helped my decision. Other products may do the job, but many are far too complicated to operate, have too many functions of doubtful usefulness, and don't exude quality like this Rangefinder.

3. The Leupold RX-600 rangefinder arrived quickly after purchase and did not disappoint. It is surprisingly light weight, easy to use and has very clear 6X magnification. Great Product--Buy This One if you are in doubt!

4. This is a nice range finder for several different reasons. Leupold makes good stuff. Optics are clear. Measurements are accurate. Three reticle option is a plus. I recomend the product.

I bought this range finder after doing alot of research on the net. Ultimately I purchased this one because of previous positive experience with leupold products. I spent some time yesterday testing it out. I was pretty impressed that I was able to range bushes repeatably and accurately out to 823 yards. I haven't really messed with the TBR function yet. The optics are clear and in my opinion this works great!

Completely unlike other rangefinders, Leupold RX-II Digital Rangefinders are packed with multiple, customizable functions. Leupold Rangefinders are much more than glorified tape measures. True Ballistic Range will make a huge impact on your accuracy, giving you a much more accurate measurement than the straight line distance to your target. Leupold Laser RX Rangefinders uses an inclinometer to measure up and down hill shots, coupled with the ballistics of your projectile to give you the equivalent horizontal range, and for rifle hunters, a holdover/hold under point or an MOA adjustment. No other rangefinder does so much to help you make the shot of a lifetime as this Leupold RX-2 Digital Range finder. The First Smart Rangefinder is an understatement when you consider all the other customizable functions and features of Digital RX Rangefinder from Leupold. Leupold RX II Digital Rangefinder offers: the Match 13 Reticle System; multiple environmental modes to overcome virtually all conditions; measurement in feet, yards, and meters; temperature readings in Celsius or Fahrenheit; the Quick Set Rotary Menu with digital signal processing to guide you quickly and easily through it all. This review is from: Leupold 112179 RX-1000I TBR W/DNA Black/Gray Rangefinder Compact 6X (Sports)
I bought mine on my way out to hunt in North Dakota. My previous laser range finder (LRF) was a Nikon 440 that I had purchased when they first came out. I was luck to be able to range something past 275 yds let alone 400 yds with that. Nikon makes wonderful products and all of my scopes are Nikon's, so I am not a hater of all things Nikon. I just think that their LRF's are lacking, as I bought the Nikon 1000 to try out and ended up returning it for the Leupold.

With this one, the display is super bright, easy to read, and gives you a ball park for your hold overs at distance. I was easily able to range whitetails in the 800 yds range. For a LRF in this price range and for the functionality that it has, I am very pleased with it. I have had no issues with it and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for one to get one of these and try it out.

This Leupold RX-750 TBR Digital Laser Rangefinder (59520) has set an entirely new standard for Rangefinder function and performance. It adds True Ballistic Range capability to take performance to the extreme. TBR takes advantage of an internal inclinometer to provide the ballistics range rather than the straight line distance to your target. Three archery ballistics settings and seven rifle ballistics groups provide tailored True Ballistic Range measurements to automatically account for shot angle and help you place shots with incredible accuracy.

Leupold RX-600 Rangefinder Reviews :
I received the new RX-600 and was so sure it was going to be great that I filled out the warranty card before I put the battery in and tried the product. I have a Leupold Vari-X-II scope which has performed exceptionally well, so I thought this rangefinder would also. When I tried the rangefinder, the reticle was not in the center of the eye viewing screen. In fact it was so far off to the left that the battery charge gage at the bottom of the viewing area could not be seen. Needless to say, I returned this product for refund.
Leupold is a good American company, and the products they make in America are very good. The problem here is that these small products at the lower end of their product line are imported, and this is what you are susceptible to receive, as we know all too well.

Decent Rangefinder for under $125

Decent Rangefinder for under $125 [preferrably compact]
Let us start with the observation that it is likely that the camera you can buy in that price range will probably not be an interchangeable lens camera, although there are a couple of exceptions to this, but those exceptions may also have "other considerations" that may preclude their selection as your camera. One obvious camera type in that exception category are those FSU cameras where questions of camera reliability often come up. That leaves us with the "fixed lens" cameras that were very popular back in the 1950s, 1960s, and less so going into the 1970s.
While there are many who may suggest such things as the Rollei 35 or 35S, that will probably be above your price range. Other cameras like that include the Olympus XA and Epic, some Konica with their Hexanon lenses, the Minolta Hi-Matic 7s II, and a few others that should be less expensive. However, for your class, I would suggest something like the Yashica Lynx 1000, Lynx 5000, or Lynx 14 (I like the Lynx 14), or the Minolta Hi-Matic 7 (the original large one) or the Minolta Hi-Matic 9. All of them have better lenses than their smaller more pocketable counterparts. They also have a greater range of lens apertures and shutter speeds. While my preference is for the Minolta Hi-Matic 9 due to its greater versatility, the next close choice for me would be the Yashica Lynx 14. These larger cameras also have more mass that helps in holding the camera still when releasing the shutter and should give you a sharper negative with less hand shaking.
One real advantage for these older rangefinder cameras is their very quiet in-the-lens leaf shutters with a very discrete little "snick" when released; much quieter than the mirror movement and shutter of an SLR. The most common lens focal length will probably be about 45mm which can be pre-set easily in a "zone focusing" mode. This also helps with quick shooting, but the rangefinder systems in the viewfinder really are pretty good. For some applications, you may find that you will prefer the rangefinder over the SLR.
Most of the suggestions you will get in response are from those who own and use the camera they will be recommending. That's a good thing. The key is to look for recurring patterns in the responses. So I'll go ahead and start it off with the...
Canon Canonet QL17 G-III
Good to very good samples can be had for US$125, or less. My particular sample was purchased from a fellow APUG member for around US$85-90, as I recall. It was - and remains - in excellent user and cosmetic condition. I have a large number of cameras in formats from half-frame 35mm up to 8x10, and it's one of my top favorites.
the Rollei is scale focus - you estimate the distance and set it manually. Fine if you're often shooting either stopped down or far enough way that really accurate focus isn't crucial. I tried one briefly but usually shooting in the wide open - f/4 so I was misfocusing enough that I sold the camera.
Ralphs post is excellent and covers most of it. Building on that, here are some personal anecdotes about the cameras as I went on a big rangefinder binge over the last year.
The GIII is solid and a good compromise on size for functionality. If you want smaller and can deal with a slower lens, I'd throw the Olympus 35RC in there. The Yashica rangefinders are also excellent but many are automatic. The Retina IIa/IIIc/etc are wonderful cameras, compact and with great lenses if you can deal with manual only and quirky ergonomics in exchange for a tiny collapsed size. The FSU cameras like the FED 2 are nice but getting a working one in good condition is hit or miss. With increased shipping costs, they aren't the bargain they once were. For the price of buying a few to find a working one, you could almost pick up a Canon Leica thread mount camera and FSU lens like the Jupiter 8. I love the Minolta 7sII but picking up a working one was difficult - it took 4 tries. The Lynx 14 is wonderful but is also an SLR sized camera, as are many of the other larger rangefinders from Yashica.
There is a good chance the camera will need the light seals replaced. You'll see a lot of posts about a seller on ebay named 'interslice' who sells kits. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to be active anymore though the instructions from his kits are posted here: http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/sealreplacement.html and material is available from micro-tools. If this sounds intimidating, I'd look for a camera which already had the light seals replaced.
Over all, look for a camera in good condition. Frankly condition trumps almost everything except ergonomics with many of these cameras as most of the better known ones have wonderful lenses.

I remember well the old days of the late 1950's in a camera store. Back then it was normal to have a customer exchange a camera because it was defective. In those days there was absolutely no expectation that things would work well when they were brand new out of the box. Today we take the little gold inspection stamps that come on new Japanese made cameras for granted. But they were a fundamental part of the program that the Japanese used to destroy the German camera making industry. The Japanese were the first to implement a modern system of manufacturing quality control. The little gold stickers were invented to demonstrate that the camera had been through a rigorous inspection process to ensure that it would work. Prior to the invention of the gold stickers cameras in both Germany and Japan were assembled, put into the box and shipped to the customer without a single inspection of any kind. The Japanese did their homework and came to the conclusion that they could get increased market share if a high percentage of their cameras worked properly when they were new. We all know now that this strategy worked beyond their expectations and the German camera industry was destroyed by a system of quality control implemented by a group of Japanese competitors.
Many people who buy Contax cameras today did not live through those good old days and have grown up in a world that has embraced, improved and taken for granted the system of quality control the Japanese invented to take over the camera industry. Today we expect things to look good and work good right out of the box. The problem is that each and every Contax camera is a time capsule from those good old days before modern quality control. They are not going to change. If you are going to use a Contax you will have to change.
Zeiss made truly great lenses for the Contax line of cameras. The only way to use these lenses is to have a Zeiss camera to mount them on. This is where the problem comes. Even if a Contax camera could be made to be perfect it would still be 1950's technology in the case of the IIa or IIIa, or 1930's technology in the case of the I, II and III. This is another issue that clashes with modern expectations. Very few of us today have much practical experience with things from the 1950's much less things from before World War II. Back in those good old days every neighborhood had its local appliance repair, camera repair, automobile repair, shoe repair, and anything repair shops. These are all gone now. They have been undone by modern quality control producing products that work well for a long time.
So here's the long and the short of it. If you want to use Zeiss Contax lenses you will have to live with a Contax camera with all its wonderful peculiarities. If you have been using a Nikon F-5 and expect to compare the light meter readings it produces with the readings from your Contaflex TLR, III or IIIa light meter you are bound to be disappointed. If you intend to compare the performance of your highly refined tenth generation electronically controlled shutter performance with that of your Contax II, you are bound to be disappointed. There is nothing made today that when compared with a similar product from fifty years ago that will not demonstrate the many deficiencies of those things made in days long gone by.
The best thing to do if you intend to own a Contax and to use it is to accept and implement the standard advice that camera store salesmen in the 1950's used to give each person who bought a new camera. Here it is: take three exposures of each important subject and change the f stop setting 1/2 stop up and down from the meter recommended exposure for each exposure. This will produce photographic happiness.
If you like to use transparency film keep in mind that when the Contax I, II and III were designed there was no such thing. Be prepared to be happy with not every exposure being acceptable with narrow latitude film. At the time these cameras were designed there was actually no understanding on the part of film manufacturers as to how to control film speed. Film speed varied widely from batch to batch. Everyone then expected their negatives to show considerable variation in exposure quality. Development by inspection was a standard practice and anyone who was any good knew all about the chemical reduction and intensification of negatives. Today these things are mostly forgotten because camera shutters are electronically controlled and film speed is tightly controlled.
So if you want to use a Contax temper your expectations. Get ready to experience the good and the bad of the 1950's. Understand that the only reason to use a Contax is the greatness of the lenses Zeiss made then. These lenses are still great today and if you want to enjoy the pictures they produce you must take three exposures of each important subject, bracket your f stop settings, and be prepared for the occasional disappointment. This is what people who owned cameras in the 1950's and the 1930's did.
When I overhaul your Contax my goal is to do perfect work. And I take the time and care to ensure that each and every camera receives the same detailed attention and care. My goal is to ensure that your camera fulfills its full potential. But not all Contax cameras have the same potential. All of the holes in the Contax body and shutter were hand drilled by skilled artisans. Each is different. Some are better than others. All are hand made from top to bottom and inside to outside. They look like they are machine made and are all the same but this is not true. Each and every Contax camera is an individual that is different from each other. When you buy a Contax camera body you have to accept that even if everything is done right there will be no way to correct things if two critical holes happen to have been drilled a couple of a thousandths of an inch too far apart and the result of this is that 1/1000 speed is actually 1/2000 or 1/750.

Which Leica M?

Which Leica M?

If you were to get one (1) Leica M camera, which would it be, and why?
Because that question can have as many answers and opinions as there are people here, but: I chose an M6 Classic because -
1. It has a good meter. Some may disagree, but I think it's fine. Actually, I think it's excellent for the kind of work I do. (I'm not a 35mm zoner)
2. It is still a completely mechanical camera, ultimately an M4 with a meter. M4 would have been my first choice, but after having done some research and considering the similar cost of an M4, I like the bonus of not having to estimate exposure or tolerate an awkward little hotshoe meter. I like that if batteries go out, I don't have to stop shooting.
3. MP is very expensive and I think I'd hesitate to use it and treat it the way I do my M6.
4. The M6 I have has the MP VF mod ($250 I'm told) and while I can't directly compare to one without, I think it's probably a significant improvement and one of the reasons to choose over the MP itself.
5. M3 would be nice, but I like black and black paint would be prohibitively expensive, more a collector piece than a user and again, no meter. If in-camera metering REALLY isn't important to you, than M3 or even M2 might be a nice choice.
6. Not specific to M6, or maybe even Leica, but I love shooting film with a completely manual camera. I think it was Mike Johnston (and I'm sure many others) has said: It has everything I need and nothing I don't to make pictures.
What it does have is so refined and so simply and logically put together that once one has gotten familiar with it, it really is a camera for life. It works that way in my hands and it is built that way. I could go on for pages, but in this world of disposable digital technology I love having something that feels connected to the past (camera is from 1984, but could easily be from 1948) and literally feels like it's machined from solid piece of steel. Dials and all. I rarely "fondle" it anymore the way I did during the 'honeymoon'. It is after all just a tool, but it is a supreme tool (to parrot Leica's marketing jive; that one seems to fit). I use it now with confidence and aplomb and I think it shows in my photos. Especially the discreet street stuff, where the Leica REALLY shines.
If you are one of those that happen to be into it for the Leica status, don't do it. I only say that because enough time on the forums talking and reading about Leica and you start to think that 'cult' status is the motivation for many, if not most. In reality, VERY few people recognize it for what it is and mostly think you are some kind of an anachronism for toting around an outdated looking film camera while they sneer at you with their D3s and 5DM2s with foot long lenses. I keep to my own, private pleasure at times like that.
I won't ramble any longer now, as I'm sure I've thoroughly given my opinion with regard to your original question about a paragraph ago. All I can say is, if you enjoy the type of photography the Leica RF is best suited for, you probably won't regret any particular M model that you choose. I haven't has GAS in years now and that alone is worth something in my book. I just take pictures now.

Multiple ballistics settings True Ballistic Range (TBR®) provides accurate aiming information matched to the performance of your rifle or bow. By calculating the incline, line of sight range to the target, and a projectile's ballistics, your RX provides rifle hunters using Leupold Ballistics Aiming System reticles as well as bow hunters the correct equivalent horizontal distance for precise shooting on an incline. In other words, aim using the True Ballistic Range, not the line of sight range. Rifle hunters can also get this data as an MOA adjustment or a holdover point. With practice, long distance/steep angle shooting will become second nature. TBR is effective to 800yards for most rifle cartridges

Very good device. I live over a compact coastal canyon and wanted a rangefinder to help me understand distances to prominent features in the near to middle distance -- high points of knolls, junctions of hiking trails, rock outcroppings, things like that. The device is consistent with distances that I can scale out of satellite images. Repeated ranging of the same target leads me to believe that the device is accurate within about one percent at longer distances. At close distances (under 20-25 yards) a trained eye can do as well as the device -- but then nobody buys a 1000-yard hunting rangefinder to measure short distances. There are better tools for that kind of distance evaluation.
I have actually secured downhill line-of-sight range readings in excess of 1000 yards (but never above 1100); this has occurred only when a very light distant object is ranged before dawn or at dusk. Reliable mid-day or bright-sky ranging seems to have a 700 yard limit. This device is better at ranging distant dark foliage than I thought it would be, returning credible measurements in the 800-900 yard range in low-light situations.
The display is a little annoying, with the familiar seven-bar field used to display both numerals and a mix of upper-lower case numbers. There can be moments of confusion when one tries to puzzle out whether the display is showing a measured range or a system label. The display is bright (too bright in low-light levels, but that can be adjusted in the device's unintuitive menu system). Though faint in bright light, the locator cross and read-out can still be seen.
The documentation is flat-out dreadful. Surely someone at Leupold has enough gifts as a technical writer to put together a user's guide that informs rather than mystifies. That person should be relived of all other duties for a few days so he/she can produce an instruction manual that is the equal of the tool it seeks to serve. Even a few "screen shots" showing the changes to expect as buttons are pushed would help. I eventually had to learn proper use of the device through trial and error. It took a while.
The device has a connector for software updates. I don't know if some of the device's display and menu-structure weaknesses can be improved through software, but if they can I encourage Leupold to get right on it. This device is too good as it is not to receive the small improvements needed to make it excellent.

Leupold GX-1 Digital Golf Rangefinder

Leupold GX-1 Digital Golf Rangefinder

Digital golf rangefinder for taking accurate line-of-sight measurements
PinHunter and Prism Lock functions help determine distance of flag and hazards
Scan mode estimates multiple distances in 1 sweep; Fog mode for inclement weather
High-quality optics with precision glass and cutting-edge coating technology
Measures 4 x 2.75 x 1.5 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 6.8 ounces
With precision optics, proprietary technology that ranges the pin easily (even at extended distances), and a Scan mode available at any time, the Leupold GX-1 digital golf rangefinder sets the pace for line-of-sight measurement. The GX-1 is built around its PinHunter and Prism Lock functions. Every GX-1 golf rangefinder has been precisely calibrated to fire a laser beam at the target in the crosshairs, whether it's a flag, tree, or sand trap. The rangefinder then uses its proprietary beam geometry to gauge the returns from the pin, and its advanced GX software to accurately separate those returns from objects in the background.
The GX-1's PinHunter function lasers precisely on a pin or other target.
There's no better way to determine exactly where a flag or water hazard is located. It's even easier to range a distance pin on courses that utilize prism technology thanks to the GX-1's Prism Lock. Simply hold the top button to scan the area around the pin. The moment the GX-1 identifies a prism-topped flagstick, the rangefinder will beep and the display will freeze. The PinHunter and Prism Lock features combine to make the GX-1 the most accurate golf rangefinder on the market.
The GX-1 also offers both Fog and Scan modes. Unlike most rangefinders--which give measurements from the first target returned, which in some cases is the fog between you and the pin--the GX-1 cuts through the weather to provide fast, accurate measurements to the green. You don't let anything stand between you and the cup, so why should your rangefinder? The Scan mode, meanwhile, delivers multiple readings in one quick sweep. Just hold down the Power button and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-sight measurements.
Construction and Functionality
Leupold's products are legendary for their durability, with a ruggedly built housing and waterproof body. Fortunately for users, the optical system in the GX-1 is built to the same exacting standards, with precision glass, cutting-edge coating technology, and rugged structural components. The resulting optics are bright and clear, and offer accurate ranging, low glare, scratch resistance, and years of dependable use. In addition, the GX-1 offers an intuitive Quick Set Menu, giving you fast access to all the features of your rangefinder without cluttering the field of view. Best of all, the GX-1 is tournament legal, as it offers line-of-sight measurement only. Need to add precision to your golf game? Look no further than the GX-1.

The rangefinder's Scan mode produces multiple readings with one quick sweep.
